Correlation between vitamin D status in mothers and their neonates in an Iranian population
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objective: There has been a resurgence of nutritional rickets in children in many developing countries. Furthermore, Vitamin D deficiency is one of the major health problems and unexpectedly has a high prevalence in sunny countries (e.g. Middle East). In order to find out the association between vitamin D deficiencies in mothers and their neonates, we designed this study. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 49 pregnant women were recruited from Ali-Asghar children’s hospital in Tehran, in 2015. All blood samples were assayed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, alkaline phosphatase and creatinine. Vitamin D deficiency defined as levels of 25(OH) D < 20 ng/ml for mothers and newborns. Results: The mean±SD 25OHD levels of the mothers and their neonates were 26.1±8.44 ng/mL and 17.23 ±10.36 ng/Ml, respectively. Serum 25OHD of the mothers and their neonates were significantly correlated (r = 0.446, P< 0.001). Conclusion: We found a significant correlation between vitamin D deficiency in mothers and their neonates. We think it is necessary to reconsider the recommendation of vitamin D supplementation for women during pregnancy.

full textPrepregnancy obesity predicts poor vitamin D status in mothers and their neonates.
Obesity is a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency, but this relation has not been studied among pregnant women, who must sustain their own vitamin D stores as well as those of their fetuses. Our objective was to assess the effect of prepregnancy BMI on maternal and newborn 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D was measured at 4-21 wk gestation and predelivery in 200 white ...

BACKGROUND Adequate vitamin D concentrations during pregnancy are necessary to neonatal calcium homeostasis, bone maturation and mineralization. The aim of study is to evaluate serum vitamin D concentrations in mothers and their newborns and effect of vitamin D deficiency on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS 552 pregnant women were recruited from Tehran University educating hospitals in the winter ...

OBJECTIVE Materno-fetal vitamin D deficiency (VDD) may occur in the early neonatal period. We aimed to evaluate the vitamin D (vitD) status and risk factors for VDD in healthy newborns and their mothers, and also in fertile women. METHODS Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were measured in 70 mothers (study group) and their...

OBJECTIVE To correlate vitamin D level in Egyptian mothers with that of their newborns, and examine risk factors related to maternal vitamin D deficiency. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out at the university teaching hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Serum 25(OH) D levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 135 pregnant women at ≥37 weeks' gestation immediately before d...
